A Liberty-style jewel

A jewel of the Liberty style: the building, rooms, windows, furnishings, statues, paintings and objects all have a D’Annunzio aura about them ...

La Storia

J
ust like in the Byzantine Art the architectural cladding would hide the richness of the interiors, the “Antica Trattoria al Gallo 1909” (member of the Association of Italy’s Historical Establishments since 2010) has a traditional façade overlooking Via Maggiore, in the San Biagio hamlet, in Ravenna, which hosts finely dressed tables, paintings, sculptures and liberty and déco-style glass windows.

“Il Gallo” holds a long family tradition which goes back to the first decades of the last century. Giuseppe Turicchia, the current owner’s great-grandfather, drew on the experience he had gained as director of the renowned San Marco hotel in Ravenna (which was demolished during the second World War) when in 1909 he bought the “Stallatico del Gallo con uso Locanda" (the Horse Stables used as Inn) from Emiliani Serafino, the previous owner since 1866 (even though the origin of this hotel is supposed to go back to an earlier period).

The bombing on the 25th of August, 1944 destroyed both the inn

and the horse stables, while the restaurant and the family house were undamaged (it is still possible to see a melted iron grating due to a splinter in the main hall of the restaurant). After the end of the war, Giuseppe Turicchia, together with his son Umberto and his daughter-in-law Verdiana, carried on the activity changing the name of the restaurant in “Antica Trattoria al Gallo 1909”.

Ferdinando Turicchia, Commander of Merit of the Italian Republic, together with his son Umberto, certified sommelier by the Italian Association of Sommeliers (AIS), are the current owners and they preserve the family tradition at its fourth generation.

The gourmet chef of this restaurant is Delia Clapiz, Fernando’s wife, who boasts more than forty years of experience as chef and who also holds a degree in Arts obtained in Venice. Therefore, not only does she oversee the carefully selected menus but also arranges the décor with Liberty-style furniture preserving the secularity of the restaurant.
